  • Rev. Alisan Rowland - Senior Pastor

Rev. Allie was born in Redlands, CA and graduated from Yucaipa High School in 1989. She earned a BA in English in 1993 from UC Riverside, and subsequently moved to San Diego, CA to enroll in an English Graduate Program at San Diego State University in 1996. It was at that time that Rev. Allie met a retired transgender MCC minister, Rev. Kris Dodds. It was Kris’ partner Jeanne Hajek who first invited Allie to attend MCC San Diego. At her very first service Allie cried and felt that she had “come home.” Finally, having found a place of genuine belonging, Allie joined the choir, at that time called The Joyful Noise Choir with James Bell as the Choir Director. While working full time as a professional technical writer, Allie discovered new passions, becoming a leader in the MCCSD’s Loaves of Love food distribution ministry and assisting regularly as a part of the congregational care team. She also engaged joyfully in the music ministry as a soprano section leader fundraising with the choir to sing in Calgary, Canada at General Conference, and helping to plan and participate in multiple Easter cantatas and Christmas productions.

In 2006, Allie discerned a call to ministry and graduated with her Master of Divinity Degree from Claremont School of Theology in 2010. She then completed a chaplaincy hospital residency with Sharp in San Diego in 2011. Becoming ordained with Metropolitan Community Churches, Allie worked as a hospice chaplain for 3 years for Elizabeth Hospice in Escondido. Allie was then called as senior pastor for MCC New Orleans and pastored the church there for 5 years; where she worked with an interfaith group on efforts to open an LGBT youth center, led a prayer vigil after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, and helped to re-open the LGBT Community Center in NOLA (joining their Board of Directors). During that time, Rev Allie became well known as a community pastor and participated in many radio and TV interviews, in addition to writing a regular article in the local LGBT newspaper.

After taking a year’s sabbatical, Rev Allie returned to the Met Church in San Diego and was able to assist during the COVID pandemic, helping to set up Zoom programming and assisting with Sunday services and congregational care. Rev Allie also became the Executive Director of the non-profit Uptown Community Service Center in 2020, launching a neighborhood food pantry and assisting people experiencing homelessness to receive basic services. In 2023, Rev Allie moved to Bellingham, WA to pursue a full-time position as a hospital chaplain and to move closer to family members of hers living in Washington state. Within her first year at St. Joseph Hospital, she was promoted to lead chaplain for her department and recently won the Diamond Award for excellence in patient care. Now Rev Allie seeks to serve the Met Church and the San Diego community at large with God’s all inclusive and unconditional love, so that all who see our shining beacon of light on the bay can “come home” to the Met.

  • Lee Bowman - Minister of Administration

Lee was born and grew up in Michigan, where he was an elementary teacher for 10 years. Lured by the beauty of the west, he packed up and moved to Denver in 1970 and worked in oil and gas investment and later for a publishing company. It was in Denver that he came out as a gay man, discovered God, and found MCC, all at the same time! After 12+ years on the Board of Directors at MCC of the Rockies, he joined the staff as Church Administrator in January, 1995. That’s where he first met Rev. Tony Freeman, during his Interim Pastorate. In late 1998, Lee was lured again—this time by the ocean and sun, Pastor Tony, and a true heartfelt calling, to be Administrator at MCC San Diego. His interests / passions include photography, writing, hiking, travel, movies and trivia, and collecting penguins - but not real ones. He may be reached at x111 or via email.

  • Colin Eckstein - Director of Administration and Programming

What we believe

  • We believe in a God who is concerned with every human being personally and accepts each one with unconditional love.
  • We have found our connection to God through the life, teachings, and ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus is our model for care, compassion and community. We also recognize and respect those who find their connection to God through other spiritual paths.
  • One of the ways in which God speaks to us is through the Bible. We consider its accounts and teachings in light of their historical and cultural context.
  • We are guided by Jesus’ teaching of the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and the Greatest Commandments: “Love God with all your heart; and love your neighbor as yourself.
  • We affirm each individual as a unique and gifted creation of God. Building on our history of celebrating diversity in sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity, we are a congregation that welcomes all people.

We are called to

  • Teach and practice the Good News of God’s unconditional love for all people.
  • Welcome home those who have been spiritually wounded or are seeking or growing a relationship with God.
  • Actively promote equality and justice for all people.
  • Be fully engaged in our own growth and with others on their spiritual journey to hope, healing, and wholeness.
